Perennial, 45-150 cm, densely adpressed-pubescent with stellate hairs throughout, glabrescent below, often with glandular hairs on inflorescence and upper surface of leaves. Stem thickish, angled, branched. Basal leaves greenish above, lanceolate-oblong to obovate, 7-40 x 3-15 cm, coarsely bicrenate; crenate-dentate or weakly lobed, petiole 1-4 cm; upper cauline sessile, cordate or broadly cordateovate, suddenly acuminate-caudate. Inflorescence rather lax, with numerous arcuate-ascending branches, forming narrow or oblong-pyramidate panicle. Bracts equalling or longer than fruiting pedicel, lanceolate to linear, acuminate to caudate, Pedicels 3-8 mm, ebracteolate. Calyx 3-6 mm, with oblong, mucronate lobes. Corolla yellow, 15-30 mm diam., stellate-tomentose outside, pellucid glands sparse or absent. Stamens 5, rarely 4, anthers reniform, filaments with purple-violet wool up to anthers. Capsule broadly elliptic to ovate, 4-8 x 3-5 mm, densely stellate-tomentose. Fl. 6-9. Coniferous and deciduous forest, Quercus and Corylus scrub, macchie, steppe, vineyards, s.l.-2300 m.
