Biennial, 30-200 cm, loosely stellate-hairy, greenish, ± glabrescent below, eglandular. Stem slender or robust, terete, longitudinally striate, with numerous branches. Basal leaves oblong-Ianceolate, 20-65 x 8-20 cm, obtuse, coarsely and often incised-crenate, petiole indistinct; upper cauline broadly cordate or orbicular, crenulate, acute or acuminate. Inflorescence loose, forming richly branched, oblong panicle, with clusters of 2-7 flowers. Bracts orbicular or broadly ovate, short-acuminate. Pedicels to 4 mm; bracteoles ovate. Calyx 6-12 mm, cleft to 2/3  or ¾  into broad triangular-Ianceolate, acutish lobes. Corolla yellow, 30-50 mm diam., without pellucid glands, stellate-tomentose outside. Stamens 5, anthers reniform, filaments not enlarged and not connate below, with purple-violet wool up to anthers. Capsule ovate, 6-8 x 5-6 mm, tomentose, glabrescent. Fl. 5-7. Pinus forest, wheat-fields, roadside banks, s.I.-1000 m.
