Shrub or small tree, 3-5 m; spines usually elongated and bearing leaves. Leaves rhombic or obovate-oblong, 3-5 x 2,5-4 cm, deeply 3-7-lobed, bilaterally adpressed grey-villous, cuneate at base; petioles 5-15 mm. Corymbs 4-10-flowered, compact, densely white-tomentose. Flowers 15-20 mm diam.; sepals 4-5 mm, triangular-cuspidate, reflexed in fruit; styles 5. Fruit reddish-orange, subglobose, up to 2 cm diam., sparingly pubescent or glabrous; pyrenes 5.
1. Leaf lobes narrow oblong, incised serrate at apex with 1-3 teeth var. orientalis
1. Leaf lobes broad and short, rounded at apex with very short teeth var. obtusata
Distribution of species: S. Europe, Crimea, Caucasia.
