Plant 8-20 cm, rhizome short, horizontal with lanceolate, black scales, with persistent old leaves and stems; fronds tufted. Rachis polished chestnut brown. Lamina 2-pinnate, larger pinnules 1-pinnate, the smaller pinnatifid, ultimate segments broadly ovoid, upper surface glabrous, lower surface rachis and branches densely covered with pale then rusty-brown, lanceolate scales or hairs. Spores ripe 5-7. Crevices in dry rocks , 300-2300 m.
S. Europe & N.W. Africa, eastward to C. Asia & W. Himalayas.
