Rhizome absent. Stems to 50 cm or more, slender; nodal glands usually absent or inconspicuous. Leaves all submerged, 15-70 x 0.5-2 mm, linear entire, mucronate , 3-veined, midrib distinctly swollen beneath, with 0-2 rows of lacunae on each side, lateral veins rather inconspicuous. Stipules 7-17 mm, closed, tubular in basal part, membranous, not fibrous-persistent. Peduncles 1-4 cm. Spikes to 1 cm. Fruitlets 1.5-2.3 mm, usually broadest above middle. Fl. 4-8. Channels, ditches, pools, s.l.-1970 m.
