Rhizome to 1 cm thick. Base of plant densely clothed with fibrous remains of old scales and sheaths. Sheaths 3-5 cm. Leaves to 50 x 0.9 cm, obtuse to emarginate, 13-17-veined. Peduncles to 25 cm. Spikes 14, each consisting of 3-5 flowers. Fruit c. 10 mm, ovoid. Sea, exposed to moderately sheltered places from water level down to deep water.
