Annual. Stems 5-20 cm, creeping to erect, compressed. Ligule c. 1 mm, truncate. Leaf blades 0.5-2 mm broad. Panicle narrowly ovoid, 3-10 cm, lowest branches single or in pairs, erecto-patent after flowering. Spikelets 3-4 mm, closely spaced with 5-9 per branch. Glumes  unequal. Lemma sparsely hairy on keel and marginal veins. Palea with crisp ate hairs along entire length of keels. Anthers 0.2-0.5 mm, not much longer than broad. Fl. 4-6. Streamsides, lakesides, grassy places, s.I.-600 m.

Mediterranean area, W. Europe, S.W. Asia, India; introduced in South America.
