Laxly caespitose perennial, shortly rhizomatous. Stems 10-55 cm, erect to geniculately ascending, smooth, glabrous, 2-3-noded. Leaf sheaths glabrous, uppermost sometimes inflated; ligule to 2 mm, truncate; blades 2.5-15.5 cm x 2.5-6 mm, linear, acuminate, glabrous but with scabrid margins. Panicle 1-4 x 0.5-1.2 cm, ovoid-oblong to shortly cylindrical, usually purplish. Spikelets 3-7 mm , oblong, truncate. Glumes 2.5-4 mm , ciliate on keels, slightly hispid on margins, abruptly terminating in an aristate point 2-3.5 mm. Lemma ovate, obtuse, c. 2/3 x glumes, hyaline, minutely hairy on veins, mid-vein sometimes minutely exserted. Palea slightly shorter than lemma. Anthers 1.2-1.8 mm. Caryopsis c. 1.5-1.6 mm. Fl. 6-8. Wet alpine and subalpine meadows, open slopes, by streams, Picea-Fagus forest, 1525-3175 m.
