Perennial with short creeping rootstock. Stems geniculate or ascending, to 120 cm, glabrous. Leaf sheaths compressed, glabrous; ligule 3.5-5 mm. Leaf blades 4-7 mm broad, acuminate, dark to greyish-green, margins and surfaces scabridulous, Panicle 10-50 cm, lax, branches with 1-4 spikelets, scabridulous. Spikelets ± terete, linear-oblong, 17-25 mm, 7-l2-flowered. Glumes ovate, glabrous, 1-veined; lower 2.5-3.5 mm, usually acute or obtuse;upper elliptic-ovate, 3.5-5 mm, 2-denticulate, 2-veined. Lemma prominently 7-veined, oblong-ovate, 6.5-7 mm, scabridulous, irregularly toothed and hyaline at apex. Palea lanceolate, 6.2 mm or equalling lemma, 2-denticulate, keels winged in upper part. Anthers linear, 1.5-2 mm, purplish or yellowish-brown. . Fl. 4-6. Edge of large, shallow lakes, rivers, streams, ditches, wet meadows, 100-1675 m.

An almost cosmopolitan species found in Europe, Asia, N. America and Australia.
