Caespitose perennial. Stems 65-90 cm. Leaves 2.5-5 mm broad, flat, becoming convolute, scabrid and sometimes also sparsely pilose on upper surface. Spike 10-20 cm, rather lax, erect or slightly nodding. Glumes 15-18 mm, 7-9-veined, scabrid on veins, with very narrow hyaline margin, gradually tapering into a short awn 1-3 mm, lower glume as long as or slightly exceeding lowest floret. Lemma 9-12 mm, scabrid towards apex, with erect awn 20-35 mm. Fl. 6-8. Mountain woods, shaley abandoned fields on hills, 550-1625 m.
