Annual. Stems 5-70 cm, erect, solitary or forming tufts. Leaf blades 4-15 cm x 2-4 mm, pubescent; at least lower sheaths hairy. Panicle 5-15 x 2-8 cm, usually dense, becoming secund, nodding, pale green, often shining; branches slender, hairy, flexuous, bearing up to 8 spikelets often forming a fascicle. Spikelets 10-18 x 3-5 mm, lanceolate. Glumes lanceolate, lower 5-8 mm, upper 7-11 mm. Lemma 8-12 x 2-3 mm, lanceolate, with shining hyaline margins; awn 10-18 mm, straight, slender. Palea clearly shorter than lemma. Stamens 3; anthers to 2 mm. Caryopsis 6-9 mm. Fl. 3-6. Dry, open grassland, sandy places, ruins, as a weed and ruderal, s.l.-2000 m.
