Annual. Stems 5-50 cm, erect or ascending, glabrous. Leaf sheaths pubescent. Leaf blades 5-20 cm x 2-5 mm, flaccid, softly hairy. Panicle 10-15 x 7-12 cm, very lax, usually simple; branches mostly longer than spikelets, spreading or drooping, rarely bearing more than 1 spikelet. Spikelets 20-30 x 5-8 mm, cuneiform, rough, hairy or glabrous. Lower glume 6-14 mm, subulate, upper glume 10-18 mm, linear-lanceolate. Lemma 14-19 x 24 mm, narrowly lanceolate, with an apical notch 1-2 mm deep; awn 15-25 mm, straight, slender, usually longer than lemma. Palea little shorter than lemma. Stamens 3; anthers 1 mm.
