Caespitose perennial, erect or geniculate-ascending from woody rootstock. Stems 30-90 cm, green, often lilac at base, purplish at nodes, glabrous throughout. Leaf blades linear, 7.5-18 cm x 1-2 mm, minutely scabridulous, ±glaucous. Inflorescence subdigitate, rarely with a very short rachis; racemes 2-8, spike-like, 4.5-7.5 cm; joints and pedicels pilose with long white or lilac hairs. Sessile and pedicellate spikelets subequal; pedicellate spikelets consisting of 1 male and 1 sterile, or 2 sterile florets. Glumes of sessile spikelet subequal, 3.5-6 mm, green or purplish on outside, long-pilose in lower half. Awn of upper lemma 10-14mm. 2n=40, 60. Fl. 6-11. Dry gravelly slopes and river beds, under Quercus, Artemisia steppe, fields, roadsides, 15-2100 m.
