Perennial herb, 30-60 cm. Leaves broadly elliptic to oblong-obovate, 10-30 x 2-8 cm, obtuse, ± apiculate, tapering into a petiole which lacks hyaline margin. Scapes compoundly panicled in upper half, rarely branched from near base. Spikes compact, clustered on terminal scape-branches. Spikelets 3-4.5 mm, 2-3-flowered. Outer bract broadly ovate, 1-1.5 mm, broadly hyaline-margined; first inner bract oblong-obovate, 2 x longer than outer bract, hyaline; second inner bract obovate, c. 3 x as long as outer bract and almost as long as calyx, obtuse, rounded or truncate and usually ± emarginate, broadly hyaline-margined. Calyx obconical, 2-3 mm; tube densely pilose on veins at least on the two inner ones; limb 5-10-lobed, primary lobes rounded-triangular, obtuse or acute, veins terminating below margin. Petals bluish-violet. Fl. 5-10. Saline places on the coast and inland, s.l.-1450 m.
