Stems 30-90 cm, erect, subspreading setose below, adpressed setose above. Leaves to 35 cm, serrate or occasionally pinnatisect, with dentate margins. Cauline leaves 2-3, uppermost one arising well below uppermost 1/3 of stem. Floral bracts absent. Buds ovoid to broadly ovoid, 2-3 cm, pendulous. Calyx with slender subspreading bristles. Petals 4, pale orange, unspotted or with pale blue or white rectangular blotch above base. Filaments to 1 cm; anthers yellow or pale violet. Capsule to 2 cm. Disc flat; stigmas 8-15. 2n=28. Fl. 7-8. Moist open mountain slopes. sheltered places on scree. 2100-2400 m; often growing in dense stands.
