Perennial herb with white air sacs. Stem up to 1.5 m, floating, subglabrous in vegetative state, erect, tinely hairy to subglabrous in flowering state. Leaves alternate, glabrous, entire, bright upper surface; young leaves lanceolate, 4-10 x 1-2 cm; old leaves oblong, 3-5 x 1.5-2 cm, petiole up to 5 cm, Flowers solitary, axillary; sepals 5, linear- lanceolate. subglabrous, up to 9 mm, somewhat persistent in fruit; petals lemon-yellow, showy, entire or bifid 10-15 x 5-8 mm, glabrous, with a darker spot at base, stamens 10 in 2 whorls; filament 2-4 mm; stigma capitate; ovary 4-5-locular. Fruit capsule irregularly dehiscing inconspicuous ribs. Fruiting pedicel 1.4 cm Seeds numerous. 1-1.3 mm. 2n=16. Fl. 7-8. Wet places by rivers and lakes at low elevations.

SE. Asia; Australia, New Zealand; Tahiti. N. and S. America. Native in N. and S. America and naturalized in Europe.
