Perennial, without a rhizome, with bulb-like swellings at stem bases, caespitose, terrestrial with stems 1-30 cm or submerged with long floating branches to 1 m. Leaves mostly sub-basal, terete, pluritubulose, imperfectly to perfectly septate. Inflorescence of 3-30 heads, flowers often partly replaced by adventitious shoots. Perianth segments 2-3 mm, all obtuse or outer ones acute, ovate to lanceolate. Stamens 3 or 6, 1/2-2/3 x perianth; anthers 0.3-1 mm, 1/3-1 x filaments. Capsule usually exceeding perianth, prismatic to obovoid, apically ± trigonous, obtuse to retuse. Wet places and in watercourses.
