Perennial, 15-40 cm; rhizome bearing scale leaves, branched, swollen above. Stems ascending, hirsute. Leaves mostly cauline, opposite, distinctly petiolate, deeply palmatisect to more than 4/5 ; segments cuneate-rhombic, deeply incised into 3-5 oblong-lanceolate laciniae. Flowers solitary, on 2-bracteate peduncles. Sepals 7-9 mm, hirsute and minutely puberulent; awn c. 2 mm. Petals obovate, emarginate, 15-20 mm; bright magneta. Mericarps ± hairy. Fl. 5-8. Woods, scrub, rocky places, nr. s.l.-2100 m.
