Annual, 10-50 cm, adpressed-pubescent. Lower leaves palmatisect to more than 4/5 , 2-5 cm diam.; segments rhombic-cuneate, deeply incised or pinnatifid into oblong laciniae; upper leaves opposite, usually distinctly petiolate and more deeply dissected. Pedicels 6-12 mm, glandular-pubescent, spreading in fruit. Sepals 5-7 mm; awn 0,5-2 mm. Petals 4-6 mm, emarginate, carmine or purple. Mericarps densely pubescent, not wrinkled. Seeds foveolate. Fl. 4-5. Damp places, including fields, banks, marshes, s.l.-400 m.
Europe, N. Africa, S.W. & C. Asia; introduced in America, Australasia.
