Sturdy annual, stout, 30-50 cm, sparsely covered with simple hairs, glabrescent or glabrous. Stipules dentate with at least 8 pointed teeth, distal tooth branched, longer than the others. Leaflets sometimes blotched, 6-20 x 5-15 mm, obovate to oblanceolate, shortly apiculate, rarely retuse. Peduncles 1-4-flowered, about equal to petiole. Flowers large, 5-9 mm. Calyx teeth equal to tube or shorter. Corolla C. 2 x calyx, rarely less. Young fruit protruding sideways from calyx in a loose spiral, later gradually contracting. Fruit large, spherical to ovoid, 10-20 mm high, spiny, covered with many-celled hairs; coils 3-10, loose, the broadest 9-15 mm diam.; surface of each coil covered with a distinct net ofveins, with about 7 radial veins anastomosing at half the distance from dorsal suture, one diagonal vein emerging from this net of veins into each spine; no submarginal vein; spines apiculate, 1-5 mm long, covered with many-celled hairs, each row of spines inserted at angle of 90-100° to surface of coil, the spines of twoadjacent coils interlocking. Fl. 4-6. On heavy, damp soils, cornfields, nr. s.l.
Mediterranean area; adventive in Central and Western Europe. Medit. element.
