Glabrous, glaucous, erect herb to 5 m. Leaves 5-11-lobed, lobes lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate; lamina to 50 x 50 cm; petiole equalling or somewhat exceeding lamina. Stipular sheath to 2 cm, Inflorescence to 30 cm, Flowers greenish-yellow. Male flowers 2 cm across; perianth segments ovate-lanceolate, acute; anthers in dense, grape-like clusters. Fruit 1-2 cm. Seeds 0.8-1.5 cm, greyish, mottled brown. Fl. 4-5. Roadsides and waste places
Widely cultivated throughout the warmer parts of the' world and often becoming naturalized. Probably native to N.E. Tropical Africa.
