Usually erect shrub to 1 m; stem ± puberulent. Leaves 2.5 x 0.8 mm, those on lateral shoots smaller. Flowers single, in axils of leaves; pedicels to 3·8 mm, puberulent; bracteoles usually 6, decussate. Flowers slightly zygomorphic. Sepals pink, 2.8-3.2 mm, glabrous. Corolla pink, campanulate, 1.7-2 mm, glabrous, lobes c. 1.1 mm. Stamens 8; filaments c. 0.9 mm, curved, anthers c. 0.8 mm, dehiscing by long introrse slits, with flattened spurs at apex of filament. Ovary 4-locular, pubescent; style ± impressed, c. 2.7 mm. Fl. 8-10. N.-facing slopes, Corylus scrub, acidic igneous rocks, 150-1000 m.

Most of Europe, N. Morocco, Azores, rare in W. Asia. Introduced to N. America. Euro-Sib. element.
