Large bush usually less than 4 m; bark dark brown, falling off in small pieces; stems puberulent and with glandular hairs to 1,5 mm. Leaves held at an acute angle to stem; petioles less than 1 cm; lamina. elliptic to oblanceolate, 4,5-8 x 2-3,5 cm, apex acute, margin usually prominently -serrate. Inflorescence a drooping panicle with 1-3 branches; pedicels 4,5-5,5 mm, glabrous. Sepals c. 1 mm. Corolla greenish-white, sometimes tinged red, 6,5-7,5 mm, glabrous outside, with long hairs inside towards base, lobes c. 1 mm, reflexed. Stamens 10; filaments 2,2-3,3 mm, swollen and hairy at base; anthers c. 1,5 mm, with paired spurs near apex. Ovary 5-locular, papillate, glabrous; style continuous with ovary. Fruit 1-1,7 cm diam., spherical, dark red, papillae conical. Fl. 10-11 . Macchie, often with Erica arborea or under Pinus brutia, sometimes with A. andrachne, often on non-calcareous soils, s.l.-300 m.
Atlantic Europe . Mediterranean area, although local in E., but extending to Cyprus, Lebanon, Canary Islands and N.W. Africa.
