Perennial with creeping rhizomes. Stem solitary, erect, 25-40 cm, glabrous, trigonous, Leaf blades flat, 18-50 x 0.7-1.5 cm, glaucous, margins and midrib scabrid. Inflorescence lax, 7-25 cm, rays to 9 cm, Involucral bracts leaf-like, lower to 32 cm, Spikelets numerous, ovoid, 3-4 x 1.4-2.5 mm, subobtuse. Glumes ovate, 1.5-2.9 mm, l-veined, obtuse, ciliolate, mucronulate, greenish turning greenish-black. Perianth bristles straight, filiform, 1-1.4 mm, equalling or slightly longer than nut, retrorsely scabrid, ± persistent. Anthers oblong, 1-1.2 mm. Style 0.6 mm, stigmas papillose. Nut obovoid or subglobose, trigonous, c. 1 mm, shortly mucronate, dull yellowish-brown. Fl. 5-7. Marshes, in woods, wet shaded places, meadows, 800-2300 m.
