Tufted or densely tufted annual. Stems erect, 2.5-16 cm, 0.5 mm diarn., striate, glabrous. Leaves drying involute, reduced to reddish or brownish-purple sheaths or with blades shorter than stems, narrowly linear, 1-20 mm, obtuse, glabrous. Inflorescence of 1-2 spikelets, glabrous. Bract 1, ovate-lanceolate, 1.7-14.5 mm, margins inrolled, apex cucullate. Spikelet 7-16-flowered, ovoid, 3.5-4.5 x 1-2 mm. Glumes ovate, 1.5-2 x 0.6-1.2 mm, obtuse to mucronulate, entire, upper half brownish-purple to ferrugineous, keel coriaceous, green, margins scarious, finely veined. Stamens 2-3; anthers oblonglinear, 0.4 mm, yellow. Style 0.8 mm ; stigmas 3, to 0.6 mm. Nut broadly obovoid-trigonous, 0.8-1 x 0.5-1.0 mm, minutely punctate, stramineous ripening dark brown. Fl. 4-6. Open wet grassy places, siliceous rocky cliffs, river valleys, drying marsh, fields, sand dunes, saline coastal mud flats, s.l.-1100 m.
