Tufted perennial. Stems 16-30 cm, trigonous. Basal leaves 3-8 rom broad, ending in a short triquetrous point. Inflorescence a simple umbel subtended by 2-3 lanceolate involucral bracts, 1-2.5 cm, greenish-brown. Spikelets 3-12,1-1.5 x 0.5-1.4 cm , sessile or stalked, nodding. Glumes 3.7-4.5 x1.7 mm, ovate-lanceolate, Perianth bristles many, to c. 12 mm, with branched tips . Anthers mostly less than 3 mm. Nut 2.5-2.8 x 1.3 mm, narrowly obovoid, reddish-brown. Fl. 5-6. In flushes and bogs below tree line, 1200-2100 m.
