Annual or perennial. Rhizomes long and very slender, scaly, sometimes bearing rounded tubers to 15 mm. Stem 10-24 cm, solitary. Leaves clustered near base of stem, 2.5-5 mm broad, shorter to longer than stem. Bracts 2-4, usually with 1 or more exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence a simple or compound umbel. Rays 3-4, to 10 cm. Spikelets 6-10 x 1-1.5 mm, linear to linear-lanceolate, with 6-10 flowers. Joints of rachis 0.5-4 mm, with narrow continuous wings. Glumes 2-3 x 2 mm, concave, flavescent. Stamens 3. Nut c. 1/2 x glumes, reddish or dark grey, obovate or obovate-oblong-trigonous, obtuse, fusco-cinereous, shining, densely punctulate. Fl. 9.
