Caespitose with short, curved rhizomes. Stems 15-100 cm, erect but slender and often nodding above, bluntly trigonous, smooth; basal sheaths hyaline, becoming pale brown. Leaves 3.5-16 mm broad, shorter than stems, flat to flattened-plicate, rather flaccid. Male spikes usually 1, narrow. Female spikes 3-5, narrowly cylindrical, 2-6 cm, lower distant, lowest sometimes arising from lower 1/3 of stem, pendent; peduncles rough at least above, filiform, to 3 x spike; lowest bracts often exceeding spike, sheath to 8 cm. Female glumes ovate-lanceolate, acute to acuminate, sometimes scabrid above, often 3-veined, pale green or pale brown, hyaline-margined, c. as long as or usually shorter than utricles. Utricles green or pale brownish-green when ripe, obovoid- to ellipsoid-trigonous, 3-5.8 mm, usually veinless, smooth or sometimes ± scabrid on adaxial side, tapering into long, slender, slightly oblique, smooth or scabrid, ± bifid beak to 2 mm with scabrid, somewhat hyaline orifice. Nut pale brown, minutely aculeate.
