Shrub or usually tree up to 20 m, Branchlets terete, 0.7-1.3 mm wide. Mature leaves on ultimate branchlets triangular-rhombic. adpressed, 0.6-1.6 mm long, with a conspicuous dorsal elliptic to nearly circular gland. Cone 6-11 mm, globose. purplish-brown to blackish-purple, often glaucous. Seeds 3-6, free. Divided into 2 subspecies by Farjon : one with a distribution in SE. Europe, the Crimea and mainly southern Turkey to Lebanon, the other a more continental element extending from N. Turkey to Kirgizstan and Pakistan:
