Glabrous perennial herb with slender erect stems up to 40 cm. Basal leaves ovate to ± orbicular, cordate or truncate, sometimes slightly decurrent into long petiole. Stem leaves sessile, 1, sometimes absent. Flowers solitary, up to 3 cm diam. Petals ovate to oblong, white with darker veins. Staminodes spathulate, terminating in 7-13 linear gland-tipped processes . Fl. 7-9. Wet meadows, stream banks, 1200-3300 m.
Most of Europe, becoming rarer in the southern part, N.W. Africa, Caucasia, N. Iraq, N. & W. Iran, Pakistan, Siberia, C. Asia, Mongolia, Japan, N. America.
