Slender, erect, perennial, 10-25 cm. Stems quadrangular, glabrous or scabrous. Leaves narrowly oblong or lanceolate, acute, 9-18 x 1-3 mm, often erect and adpressed to the stem. Inflorescence with fewer than 10 flowers. Bracts usually small and scarious. Sepals 4-5 mm. Petals 6-7 mm, about 1 ½  x longer than the sepals. Fl. 5-7. By streams, water-meadows, 1500-2800 m.
