Perennial or perhaps sometimes annual or biennial with procumbent to erect stems up to 25 cm. Leaves up to 13 mm. Inflorescence lax to fairly dense, the upper leaves not exceeding the flowers. Perigynous cup 1,2-2 mm in fruit. Sepals equalling to 2 x longer than the perigynous zone in fruit, spreading to erect, ± oblong, broadly rounded at the apex, with conspicuous scarious margins about as broad as the green central part. The whole flower 3-6 mm in fruit. Fl. 4-6.
1. Compact, often subcaespitose, with procumbent or ascending stems 2-10 cm, internodes up to 10 mm, usually not purple; flower 3-4,7 mm in fruit subsp. marginatus
1. More robust and elongate with ascending to erect stems mostly 10-25 cm, the longer internodes 10-25 mm, usually conspicuously dark purple; flower 3,8-5 mm in fruit subsp. dichotomus
