Erect annual with setose stems up to 1 m. Leaves oblong-lancealate, entire or serrate. Capitula ovoid, 0,5-1,5 cm diam.; flowers bluish to lilac. Involucral bracts ovate, apiculate; receptacular bracts ovate to oblong, abruptly attenuate into a long, purplish awn; both pubescent, margin ciliate or not. Involucel 4-5 mm long, with 4 long and 4 short apical teeth. Calyx cupuliform with numerous hairlike setae. Fl. 5-7. Fields, waste places, 120-1700 m.
