Tree to 20 m. Young twigs velutinous. Leaves 4-12 x 3-4 cm, ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, oblique at base, usually long-acuminate, sharply serrate, scabrid above, velutinous and brownish-green or greyish-green beneath. Petiole to 1.5 cm. Drupe 9-12 mm diam., brownish to blackish. Pedicel to 3.5 cm, longer than next internode. Stone reticulate-rugose. Fl. 3-4. Open rocky slopes and in thickets, rarely in forest, usually solitary, often planted, 50-700 m.
N.W. Africa, S. Europe, W. Transcaucasia. Medit. element. In W. Syria and Cyprus it is probably only planted or in some places subspontaneous.
