Perennial, up to 60 cm. Leaves of sterile shoots obovate-spathulate, the cauline lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, always acute, decreasing in size upwards. Indumentum ± dimorphic, strigose, of few-rayed, ± branched stellate hairs. Racemes up to 30 cm. Pedicels spreading, strigose. Sepals 2,5-4 mm, deciduous. Petals retuse or bilobed, 4-7 x 1-3 mm, with sparse indumentum. Fruits ovate, obovate or orbicular, 3-6 mm long and wide, canescent with minute adpressed, few-rayed, stellate hairs; valves ± equally inflated. Styles 3-4 mm, with dense basal indumentum. Seeds narrowly winged. Two varieties may be recognised:

1-Stems stout; fruits 3,5-6 x4-5 mm; stellate hairs on lower surface of cauline leaves 0,5-1 mm diam. var. trichostachyum

1-Stems slender; fruits 2,5-3 mm; stellate hairs on lower surface of cauline leaves 0,2-0,5 mm var. stenophyllum
