Tree up to 15 m. Young shoots brown, covered with long hairs. Old trunks with dark brown, fissured bark coming off in flakes. Leaves ovate to ovate-oblong, acuminate, 4.5-9 x 2.2-4.6 cm, very sharply biserrate with 9-20 pairs of veins, secondary teeth 2-4 between each pair of primary teeth, cuneate to subcordate at base, hairy when young, glabrescent except for hairs on veins. Petioies 0.5-0.8 cm, densely hairy. Fruiting catkins to 6 em. Involucre oblong-ovoid, acuminate, pale reddishyellow- haired at base, strongly veined, to 20 mm in fruit. Nut ovoid, 4-5 mm, pointed, yellowish-brown, smooth, glabrous, obscurely veined. Fl. 3. Deciduous forests or scrub, in open Pinus brutia and P. nigra forest, very often on dry stony hillsides , 50-1700 m.
