Stem single, erect, 75-100 cm, glandular-setulose in upper part, arising from a taproot. Leaves mostly basal, basal and lower cauline obovate-oblanceolate, ± runcinate, glandular-setulose or scabrous-setulose, less often glabrous, attenuate into winged petioloid base, coarsely sinuate-dentate to denticulate, obtuse, acuminate, apiculate, 16-32 x 5.5-9 cm, median cauline sessile, elliptic, ovate or panduriform to lanceolate, sinuate-dentate to entire, auriculate, decreasing rapidly in size up stem. Inflorescence corymbiform, 15-60-capitulate; bracts and pedicels glandular-setose. Involucre 12-15 mm; phyllaries 16-20, 3-seriate, glandular-setose or rarely glabrous, green. Flowers pale blue or lavender-blue, 2-2.2 cm, finely long-hairy about mouth. Achenes 6.5 mm, light brown, with usually 1 or 2 major ribs on each face and distinct margins, attenuate into a con-colorous 1 mm beak. Pappus white, inner 7-8.5 mm, outer 0.3 mm. Fl. 6-8. Rocky slopes, meadows and Quercus woods, 1200-2750 m.
