Plant grey-adpressed-tomentose, eglandular. Flowering stems 9-46 cm, arising from short stout branched caudices. Sterile shoots with prominently swollen leaf-bases. Basal leaves often crowded, linear-oblanceolate to spathulate, 7-60 x 1.5-8 mm; cauline ones narrowing to linear above; sometimes with crisply undulate margin. Capitula numerous, subglobose. Phyllaries ± flat or cucullate, yellow or apricot. All flowers hermaphrodite. Fl. 5-8. Dry calcareous or sandy soils; steppe, banks, 250-3200 m.
