Stem branched, 6-20 cm. Basal leaves soon deciduous, elliptic, decurrent into petiole, margin obtusely and unevenly crenate to serrate, 2-9 x0,6-4 cm, petiole shorter than blade. Cauline leaves alternate, similar, uppermost opposite or whorled, trifid or pinnatifid, spinose, 1-2,5 cm. Bracteoles c. 6, sometimes unequal, margin spinulose, green and white, 12-22 x 5-8 mm. Pedicels of male flowers 5-7 mm. Sepals 2-3 mm. Fruit vesicles and tubercles seldom papillose, 5-7 mm. Fl. 5-6. Fields, vineyards, often calcareous, 600-1900 m.
