Stem robust, to 2 m. Leaf blades 4-14 mm broad. Female and male spikes separated by a distance of 1.5-7 cm. Female spike 6-42 cm, 1.8-2.3 cm diam. when ripe, cinnamon brown; scales filiform, longer than hairs, with a lanceolate-acuminate, pale brown apex. Stigma linear. Male spike mostly 1.5 x as long as female, 12-38 cm; scales filiform, some simple; others dilated and forked at apex. Anthers 2-3 mm. Pollen grains single. Fruit 1 mm, dehiscent; hairs 24-54, 5-7 mm, on a basal zone 0.3-2 mm. Fl. 6-11. Swamps, ditches, lakes, river beds, s.l.-1300 m.
