Biennial, 60-100 cm, shortly adpressed yellowish-tomentose, eglandular. Stem robust, angled, simple. Basal leaves lanceolate, 16-32 x 4-8 cm, acute or acuminate, entire, petiolate to 4 cm; cauline smaller, numerous, crowded, often with wavy margins. Inflorescence dense, simple, 4-6 cm thick, flowers 3-7 in crowded clusters. Bracts large, 15-25 mm, broadly ovate to ovate-lanceolate, longer than flowers, upper long-caudate; bracteoles 2. Pedicels 3-15 mm. Calyx 7-12 mm, lobes narrowly lanceolate, acute. Corolla yellow, 30-40 mm diam., without pellucid glands, pubescent outside. Stamens 5, filaments with whitish-yellow wool up to anthers, 2 anterior with decurrent anthers 3-4 mm. Capsule elliptic, 7-8 x 5 mm, stellate-tomentose. Fl. 7-8. Riversides, mountain slopes, pastures, 1400-1800m.
