Biennial, 80-150 cm, adpressed white-woolly-tomentose, floccose, glabrescent. Stem robust, terete, simple or with few short branches. Basal leaves lanceolate to elliptic, 10-50 x 3-15 cm, indistinctly or distinctly crenate or denticulate, acutish or shortly acuminate, petiole 2-8 cm; cauline similar but smaller, upper sessile, acuminate, rounded at base. Inflorescence cylindrical, simple or with few slender branches, with at first congested, later remote, clusters of 4-9 flowers. Bracts ovate-lanceolate to linear-setaceous. Pedicels absent or to 5 mm; bracteoles .small. Calyx 3-6 mm, densely tomentose, glabrescent, microglandular, lobes linear-lanceolate to linear. Corolla yellow, 15-25 mm diam., without pellucid glands, floccose-tomentose outside. Stamens 5, anthers reniform, filaments with whitish-yellow wool, 2 anterior glabrous near apex. Capsule ovate to oblong-cylindrical, 5-8 x 2,5-5 mm, tomentose, glabrescent. Fl. 5-9. Coastal sands, dunes, moist banks, Quercus and Corylus scrub, coniferous forest, s.l.-2500 m.
