Biennial, 75-100 cm, with rough floccose-tomentose indumentum of yellowish stellate hairs, later becoming glabrescent. Stem robust, terete, simple. Basal leaves ovate-oblong, obtuse, subcordate or shortly cuneate, 12-30 x 6-16 cm, ± coarsely crenate, petiole 3-10 cm; cauline similar but smaller. Inflorescence cylindrical, simple or sparingly branched, with crowded clusters of 3-5, mostly 4 flowers. Bracts lanceolate, stellate-tomentose and glandular-hairy. Pedicels absent or very short; bracteoles lanceolate. Calyx 8-12 mm, yellowish-tomentose and glandular-hairy, lobes linear-lanceolate, acuminate. Corolla yellow, 25-40 mm diam., without pellucid glands, densely tomentose outside. Stamens 5, anthers reniform, filaments enlarged and coniiate below, with purple-violet wool up to anthers. Capsule broadly ovate, 8-10 x 6-8 mm, stellate-tomentose, glabrescent. Fl. 5-6. Rocky slopes, roadsides, meadows, s.l.-900 m.
