Perennial , 24-60 cm,. ± glabrous; stems fleshy to woody, usually stout , often reddish or purplish below. Basal leaves of first year small , broadly ovate, undivided, margin sharply denticulate; later basal and lower cauline leaves petiolate, upper cauline ± sessile; lamina 2-pinnatifid to 3-pinnatisect, primary segments ovate-elliptic to lanceolate or oblong, dentate to 2-pinnatisect. Bracts lanceolate to linear, dentate to pinnatisect, uppermost entire. Cymes alternate, 5-24-flowered, peduncle 8-33 mm; alar pedicels 0·5-2 mm, much shorter than subglabrous, 4-10 mm bracteoles. Calyx lobes glabrous, ovate to obovate, rarely oblong, 2-4,5 x 14,5 mm; scarious margin white, 0,3-0,6 mm broad, denticulate to lacerate. Corolla maroon, 5-6 mm; lateral and lower lobes with yellowish-white border. Stamens exserted; staminode yellow, orbicular, subequalling upper lip, margin ± crenate. Capsules ovoid to globose, 4-5 x 3,5-4,5 mm. Fl. 4-7. Rocky slopes, Artemisia and Astragalus steppe, grainfield margins, roadsides, s.l.-2000 m.
