Annual with a hot, peppery taste. Stems erect. Ochreae brown, fringed. Leaves lanceolate to very narrowly ovate, acuminate. Peduncles with brownish, sessile glands. Inflorescence a very lax spike, the flowers ± distant. Perianth 2,5-5 m, pink or greenish, with yellowish or brownish glands. Nut brownish, dull. Fl. 8. damp forests c. 100-600 m.
