Caespitose perennial. Stems 50-100 cm, usually minutely pilose at and below nodes. Leaves 4-10 mm broad, flat, sparsely pilose on upper surface. Spike usually 10-15 cm, rather dense, erect or nodding; rachis spinulose-ciliate on angles. Glumes 5-8 mm, 3-5-veined, scabrid on veins, with distinct hyaline margin, ± abruptly tapering into short awn, lower distinctly shorter than lowest floret. Lemma 8-10 mm, glabrous on back, ±scabridulous towards apex, with erect or slightly flexuous awn 1.5-1.8 cm. Fl. 6-8. Usually in woods, nr s.l.-2000 m.
