Annual. Stems 20-50 cm, erect, hairy below panicle. Leaf sheaths with patent hairs. Leaf blades 12-20 cm x 4-6 mm, with dense, short hairs. Panicle 15-20 x 5-12 cm, dense, stiffly erect; branches rough, hairy, mostly shorter than spikelets. Spikelets 20-30 x 7-8 mm , narrowly cuneiform, glabrous or hairy, with 3-5 florets. Glumes linear-lanceolate, largely hyaline, lower 15-18 mm, upper 20-25 mm. Lemma 22-25 mm, narrowly lanceolate, with a deep apical notch and pointed callus; awn 25-40 mm, straight, stout, very rough. Palea much shorter than lemma. Stamens 2; anthers c. 1 mm. Caryopsis 15-18 mm. Fl. 4-7. Quercus coccifera phrygana, dry grassland, shaley slopes, waste places, margins of cultivated fields, s.l.1000 m
