Glabrous perennial herb. Stems branched, usually reddish, up to 3 m. Leaves petiolate, green, ovate-lanceolate, prominently pinnately nerved. Racemes up to 10 cm, ± erect. Perianth segments cream or greenish, becoming pink or reddish in fruit, 2-3 mm. Stamens 10. Carpels 10. Fruit depressed-spherical, purplish to black. Fl. 6-9. Slopes, fields., scrub, s.I.-500 m.
N. America, Mexico. Naturalised in S. & C. Europe, Transcaucasia, Cyprus.
