Plants 10-30 cm. Leaves 3-5, erecto-patent, oblong-lanceolate. Flowers 2-9, variable in size. Sepalsovate-oblong,8-11mm, green or whitish-green. Petals very small, triangular to triangular-ovate, obtuse, 2 mm, c. 2.5 mm broad at base, rose-violet or greenish-rose, velvety, margins ±villous. Labellum entire, subquadrate or trapeziform, maroon, deep brown or purplish-brown, velvety, bigibbous near base, emarginate in front, with glabrous, yellowish-green, upturned appendix in sinus. Speculum reduced near base, usually scutelliform, only slightly branched. Column with minutely apiculate connective.
1. Spike usually elongate, ± lax, to 15-flowered; lower bracts 2-3 x ovary, lowest sometimes ± leaf-like; flowers small: sepals 9-10 mm, dull green, sometimes tinged pale violet, labellum 6-7 x 8-10 mm, ± rectangular, purplish-brown, lateral margins recurved, with shining greyish-white nairs, ± emarginate in front, with small upwards-turned appendix; speculum shallowly U-shaped, branched, enclosing 2-3 velvety areas subsp. carduchorum

Spike fairly dense, 3-9-flowered; lower bracts c. 2 x ovary, lanceolate; flowers large: sepals 11-14 mm, green or whitish-green sometimes suffused with rose; labellum 10-12 x 12-15 mm, subquadrate or trapeziform; speculum forming a somewhat branched pattern of lines on basal half of labellum, enclosing a rather short, dark basal area, rarely reduced to some spots
   2. Labellum 9-10 x 11-13 mm,± convex with margins ± spreading, sometimes with a small tuft of whitish hairs above apical sinus, brownish-velvety, rarely with margins on apical side turning greenish-yellow subsp. bornmuelleri
   2. Labellum 11-12 x l2-l5mm, slightly arched, uniformly dark maroon-brown velvety subsp. grandiflora
