Creeping glabrous perennial; stems 3-50 cm, rooting at the nodes. Leaves obovate, 0.7-4.5 cm, petiole 5-10 mm. Flowers 1 in the leafaxils, subsessile; sepals 4, 1.4-2 x 0.8-1.8 mm; petals absent; stamens 4. Capsule obovoid, 2-5 x 2-3 mm, obscurely 4-angled; seeds 0,6-0,9 mm, pluriseriate in each loculus, free. Fl. 7-8. Marshes, ditches and edges of rivers.
Europe N. to England, Georgia, N.W. Iran, W. Syria, N. America; introduced in New Zealand.
